Royals announce 2009 Spring Training schedule12/01/2008 3:03 PM ET
KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals announced their 2009 Spring Training schedule. The club will open its seventh season as members of the newly-expanded 14-team Cactus League by playing a charity game against its Surprise complex mates, the Texas Rangers, on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The game benefits the Surprise Sundancers. The Royals will officially open Cactus League play the next day as they host the Rangers in Surprise. Kansas City's 36-game Spring Training schedule, the largest in the history of the franchise, features 17 home games at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. The club will also face the Texas Rangers as the visiting team in three additional games at the facility, including the Feb. 25 charity game. The slate includes both Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians, who will join the Cactus League in 2009. The Dodgers made a brief appearance in Arizona last season at the end of March, but will now call Glendale, Ariz., home. The Indians, who will train in Goodyear, Ariz., trained in Tucson through 1992 before spending the past 16 years in Florida. The Royals will host every Cactus League squad at Surprise Stadium at least once. The March 18, March 20 and March 24 home games against the Mariners, Dodgers and A's, respectively, are scheduled for 8:05 p.m. (CT). All other games will start at 2:05 p.m. (CT) until Daylight Saving Time on March 8 when the games will start at 3:05 p.m. (CT). The April 2 game against the Rangers will begin at 2:05 p.m. (CT) as the Royals will break camp immediately following the contest. The Royals will conclude their 2009 Spring Training schedule by traveling to Texas to meet the Rangers at their Double-A ballpark in Frisco on Friday, April 3 at 7:05 p.m. (CT) and at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Saturday, April 4 at 1:05 p.m. (CT). The Royals will have an off day Sunday, April 5 in Chicago before opening the season on Monday, April 6 against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Individual Spring Training game tickets will go on sale Jan. 3, 2008 beginning at 9 a.m. CT. For more information, fans may visit royals.com. Pitchers and catchers will report to Surprise on Friday, Feb. 13. Workouts for pitchers begin the following day, Saturday, Feb. 14. The remainder of the squad will report on Tuesday, Feb. 17 and begin workouts for the 2009 campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
