Focus Area
Comments
Hitting Ability:Maddox has a swing with some length. He can absolutely punish bad pitching, but doesn't always square up and dominate against better competition.
Power:He has huge raw power in batting practice.
Running speed:He's a well below-average runner.
Base running:He works very hard, but he's really slow.
Arm strength:Arm is plus plus, perhaps the best of any catcher in the Draft class.
Fielding:He's really big and might not be able to catch long-term. His hands are actually good and he catches the ball well.
Range:He can't move laterally and his feet don't work well behind the plate.
Physical Description:Maddox is a big kid with tree-trunk thighs.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Plus raw power and a plus plus throwing arm. He has great makeup and works very hard.
Weaknesses:He might be too big to catch. Other than his arm, his defensive skills are lacking. His overall ability to hit is in question.
Summary:There are several things to like about Maddox, particularly his tremendous raw power and his cannon for a throwing arm. His makeup is off the charts and he has maturity in his approach. On the down side, he's a well below-average runner and there are those who believe his size will mean he can't catch long-term. He has the power to play a corner outfield spot or first. Whether teams think he'll make enough contact to reach that power could determine his Draft status.
