August 29, 1977 > Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals breaks Ty Cobb's 49-year-old record of 892 career stolen bases when he swipes Nos. 893 and 894 in a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. Brock's final total of 938 steals will stand as the all-time mark until Rickey Henderson passes him up in 1990.
