Royals get good blend of players

Royals round-by-round picks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The first five picks exemplified the balance in the
Royals' 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
The Royals got a prize prospect in right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke,
followed by catcher Adam Donachie, first baseman David Jensen, left-handed
pitcher Daniel Christensen and middle infielder Donald Murphy. A righty, a
lefty, a receiver and three promising bats. Three high school players, two
college players.
To the Royals, balance was beautiful.
"You could see the type of draft we were having," Kansas City scouting
director Deric Ladnier said. "It was a good blend of just about every
player you could possibly want, high school and college."
Ladnier said the Royals used Day 2 to fill out the needs of their farm
clubs for the Gulf Coast League and the Northwest League in Spokane.
Kansas City also selected some "draft and follow" guys who may be headed
to junior college. The Royals will retain their rights.
"I was very pleased with the blend of different types of players,"
Royals general manager Allard Baird said. "High school guys, college guys.
Athletes with upside, guys who are less projection and more present skill.
This was a draft that was probably down a little going in. I think Deric
and his staff maximized the ability that was presented to us very well."
The next step will be signing players and getting them into the
system. Ladnier said he spoke with Greinke's representative Wednesday
morning.
"We discussed some issues, kind of set the stage for the way we're
going to conduct business," Ladnier said. "I've spoken with Zack and he's
excited about it. I've spoken with Adam Donachie. He's excited."
Greinke, the pitcher from Apopka (Fla.) High School was the No. 6
overall pick Colt Griffin, the Royals' first-round pick in 2001 who went
No. 9 overall, signed a $2.4 million deal.
"It's a process," Baird said of the Greinke negotiations. "We'd like,
obviously, to get it done quick. They'd like to get it done quick. But
these things sometimes take time. To put a time frame on it, you can't do
that. We have a young kid who we think a lot of. We think he's a very
polished right-handed starting pitcher. The sooner he gets out, the better
it's going to be for him and the organization. I think both sides know
that. As long as both sides have a theme to work off of - and I believe we
do in this situation - then things work themselves out."
