Q & A with Tery Ibanez
Tery Ibanez, wife of Royals outfielder Raul Ibanez, has been instrumental in Raul's success from high school, to the minor leagues and to the Majors. For the past two years, she has spearheaded the Royals Cookbook, From Our Grill to Yours, raising thousands of dollars for The Children's Place. The Royals Report caught up with Tery to talk about the cookbook and her life with Raul.
Question: What is your favorite part of this year's Royals Wives Cookbook?
Edna
Fremont, Neb.
Ibanez: We wanted to do something that highlighted Kansas City. We are in the Midwest, so this year we focused on BBQ and picnic food. The cookbook is very similar to last year's book by including interesting tid bits about players' lives and eating habits, however focusing on BBQ foods. The layout of the book is very neat and includes family and baseball action photos, as well as photos of Kauffman Stadium. It's a very fun book that I think people will really enjoy.
Question: Can you talk about why The Children's Place was chosen for the benefactor of the cookbook?
Venessa
Olathe, Kan.
Ibanez: The wives all came together last year and voted on which charity should receive the funds from the cookbook. We all felt everybody could relate to children and child neglect. We all want to do what we can to eliminate child abuse. If we can raise money to help prevention and treatment services, then we are helping them a great deal with the sales of the cookbook.
The Children's Place is an outstanding non-profit organization that offers hope for abused and neglected children. Since the organization was the benefactor last year, we wanted them to be able to count on receiving money from the sales of the cookbook.
Question: How has Kansas City treated your family?
Charles
Overland Park, Kan.
Ibanez: Wonderful. We love Kansas City. The Royals family itself has really taken us in. When I was new, Penny Glass was wonderful to us. Our son R.J. was born in Kansas City. The fans and the people in Kansas City are so nice, and the city is a great place to raise a family. The Royals organization has always treated us awesome, no complaints.
Question: My wife and I were wondering how often the wives travel to away games?
Jay
Lake Lotawana, Mo.
Ibanez: The wives who have kids travel less than the ones who don't have children. However, there are certain cities that are great for trips, like Seattle or Chicago. It is pretty much the same cities that the wives go to. Some wives travel more than others. I used to travel more when our son was younger, but now with him being a little older it makes it more difficult to travel.
Question: I bet it is pretty exciting to have your husband playing Major League Baseball for the Royals. I have one question, does Raul's mood change after a big win or a tough loss?
Thanks,
Scott
Prairie Village, Kan.
Ibanez: Raul, honestly, never brings home anything. Sure, when we are in a pennant race, he likes to win. Once he leaves the field, he doesn't bring it home at all. What you see is what you get with Raul. He could have a bad day or he could have a good day, but he is always the same when he comes home. He has been that way since high school. Don't get me wrong, he wants to win! If he goes 0-for-4 and we won, he prefers that to getting a hit, yet losing. He is definitely a team player.
