Padres at the plate: Terrmel Sledge hit a prodigious home run, his second, in the first inning, and he almost homered in his next at-bat, but Royals right fielder Mark Teahen made a leaping catch at the fence. Mike Cameron homered in the third and doubled to lead off the sixth.

Royals at the plate: Ryan Shealy hit a two-run homer in the second inning, pushing his club-leading RBI total to six. Mike Sweeney, making his Spring Training debut, went 1-for-3 with a strikeout. Sweeney singled in the fifth and was replaced on the basepaths by Justin Huber. Ross Gload went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored two runs.

Padres on the mound: Jake Peavy gave up two runs on three hits, including a home run, while walking two and striking out four in two innings. Mike Thompson allowed two runs on three hits in two innings.

Royals on the mound: Jorge De La Rosa gave up two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings before leaving after being struck in the left hand by a Todd Walker line drive. He struck out two and walked none. Brandon Duckworth, making his first appearance since having elbow surgery on Aug. 15, retired all six batters he faced and struck out two.

Cactus League records: Padres 3-2; Royals 2-3.

Up next: Brian Bannister is scheduled to start on Tuesday for the Royals against the Athletics at Phoenix Municipal Stadium at 2:05 p.m. CT. The Royals will also pitch Joakim Soria, Kenny Ray and Ryan Braun against Oakland. The Padres will start Chris Young against the Diamondbacks at 8:05 p.m. at the Peoria Sports Complex. National League Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb will start for the Diamondbacks.
