ROYALS 11, MARINERS 3
At Surprise, Ariz.
Thursday, March 8

Mariners at the plate: Leadoff man Willie Bloomquist had two singles and scored a run in his first three at-bats and Jose Vidro contributed an RBI double to give the Mariners the early lead.

Royals at the plate: Alex Gordon drove in four runs on a bases-loaded triple and an RBI double, and Jason LaRue added a homer as Kansas City won its fourth consecutive game. With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Gordon fell behind 0-2 before working the count full. Mariners right-hander Jorge Campillo then tried a fastball and Gordon lined it into the gap in right-center to score Reggie Sanders, Emil Brown and Ryan Shealy and erase a 2-0 Seattle lead. LaRue then hit the next pitch over the left-field fence for his third homer in eight games. Billy Butler added a towering three-run shot in the seventh

Mariners on the mound: Veteran left-hander Jarrod Washburn was very sharp, limiting the Royals to one hit -- a Shealy single in the second inning -- and just two baserunners in three innings. Washburn did not walk anyone and struck out four.

Royals on the mound: Right-hander Todd Wellemeyer, who gave up two runs in two innings in his previous stint, pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just one baserunner. Starter Odalis Perez had mixed results in the lefty's second outing of the spring. Perez gave up two runs on five hits in three innings, but after Seattle scored twice in the first, Perez limited the next 12 Mariners to only two hits, both singles.

Cactus League records: Mariners 1-7; Royals 5-3.

Up next: The Royals have their lone split-squad day of the Cactus League season on Friday. They will take on the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale at 2:05 p.m. CT, followed by an 8:05 p.m. game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Surprise Stadium. Right-hander Luke Hudson will start the nightcap against the Angels, who will start Nick Adenhart. The Mariners and right-hander Jeff Weaver will host the Colorado Rockies and Jeff Francis in a 2:05 p.m. contest.
