Cardinals cut three pitchers
Hawskworth, Worrell optioned; Wasdin reassigned
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals trimmed three pitchers from camp on Tuesday, including the first two from the 40-man roster.
Blake Hawksworth and Mark Worrell were both optioned to the Minor Leagues, and John Wasdin was reassigned to Minor League camp.
Hawksworth made two game appearances this spring, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in three innings. He struck out seven. Worrell pitched three innings in three games, permitting two runs on four hits.
Wasdin, the only Major League veteran of the group, did not make it into a Grapefruit League game. He was bothered by what he called "shoulder irritation" early in camp and never got to game strength in time to compete for a job.
"He had to take all the assignments [in order] to make an impression," manager Tony La Russa said. "But we knew him in Oakland, and he's really a solid individual, so he understands. He'll just have to do it the other way now."
