MIAMI -- John Buck is now the proud papa of two. His wife, Brooke, delivered twin boys for the Royals' catcher late Thursday afternoon in Kansas City.

Cooper arrived at 5:29 p.m. CT, followed by Brody at 5:31 p.m.

They were reported doing fine, but because of health concerns due to the early arrival of the twins, Buck remained in Kansas City and was placed on emergency leave for three days.

Buck, by phone from Kansas City, said his wife encountered a problem with high blood pressure but she was OK.

"They finally let her go see the boys," Buck said. "It was a little scary, but we're in good shape now. Everybody is healthy, everybody is good. We've had a breath of fresh air and we should enjoy it now."

To take his place, catcher Matt Tupman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Miguel Olivo was behind the plate for Friday night's series opener against the Marlins.

Tupman took Olivo's spot for four games at the beginning of the season, while Olivo served a suspension held over from 2007. Tupman did not play for the Royals and has yet to make his Major League debut. For Omaha, he was batting .278 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 24 games.

Buck did not start Thursday's game against the Tigers and was on the phone with doctors from the Kauffman Stadium clubhouse. He left late in the game to be with Brooke for the delivery.

Royals manager Trey Hillman said he expected that, if all went well, Buck would rejoin the Royals in time for a four-game series at Boston that begins on Monday. Buck said he appreciated the concern shown by Hillman and Royals general manager Dayton Moore.

"Even though everything is OK now, they wanted me to come back totally free and fresh of any concern," Buck said. "It's just that the boys are in an intensive care unit and they just wanted me when I leave in three days to be totally good with it and that way it won't be on my mind."

Cooper weighed in at 4.9 pounds and Brody at 4.4 pounds.

"The mother and bouncing baby boys, as much as they can bounce at that weight, are healthy and John was there for them and that was the big thing," Hillman said.
