Royals partner with TeamSmile
133 local youth receive $104,000 of dental treatment
Big, toothy smiles filled the rooms on Saturday, July 26 at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City Thornberry Unit. The Kansas City, Mo., location was the site of the Royals' first TeamSmile event -- a clinic that provided free dental health education, screening and treatment to local children.
With the Royals, Willie Wilson Baseball, TeamSmile, 11 local dentists and more than 50 volunteers teaming up, the event treated 133 kids with $104,000 worth of dental work.
Royals shortstop Mike Aviles and designated hitter Billy Butler joined Royals Hall of Famers Willie Wilson and Frank White as well as mascot Sluggerrrr and members of the K Crew as special guests for the Saturday dental clinic, meeting young patients, posing for pictures and signing autographs.
Along with receiving dental care -- possibly for the first time in their lives -- the children who attended also received two tickets to the Kansas City Royals-Tampa Bay Rays game on Sunday, July 27.
TeamSmile is a non-profit organization that teams with major sports organizations to provide quality dental care to underserved populations, while encouraging volunteerism within the dental community. With the help of local dental professionals, Sullivan-Schein, Colgate® and select dental insurance companies and manufacturers, TeamSmile provides free oral health education, screening and treatment for children who might not otherwise receive it.
