ROYALS 9, WHITE SOX 3
at Surprise, Ariz.
Thursday, March 12

Royals at the plate: After the Royals loaded the bases in the fourth, Ross Gload hit a shot off the pitcher's foot that caromed into short right field for a two-run double. Mark Teahen sent a high shot over the right-field bullpen for a two-run homer, his first. Chris Lubanski also got his first, a three-run shot that gave him a .500 (7-for-14) average. Coco Crisp had a perfect day with two walks and a single, raising his on-base percentage to .545. Mike Jacobs and Alex Gordon each had two hits.

White Sox at the plate: Josh Fields belted his first home run, a solo shot to right-center field. DeWayne Wise had two singles and boosted his average to .412 (7-for-17).

Royals on the mound: Horacio Ramirez, trying to become the rotation's lone lefty, gave up six hits and three runs as he became the first KC pitcher to go five innings. In his four games, Ramirez has a 5.25 ERA. Kyle Davies, virtually a certainty for the rotation, followed and pitched a scoreless sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth.

White Sox on the mound: Clayton Richard went 3 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and two runs. After Gload's shot off his foot, he was taken out. Franklyn German didn't retire a batter in the fifth, giving up four hits, a walk and four runs. Randy Williams rescued him and retired all six batters he faced.

Cactus League records: Royals 8-4-2, White Sox 7-8.

Up next: The Royals have their only split-squad games of the spring on Friday. Hall of Famer George Brett will manage the Royals against the Rangers at Surprise Stadium. Robinson Tejeda will start against the Rangers' Vicente Padilla. Bench coach John Gibbons will manage the Royals at Maryvale, Ariz., where Zack Greinke will start against the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo. Kyle Farnsworth, who has given up five runs in three innings so far, is also on the Royals' list. Both games start at 3:05 p.m. CT.

The White Sox make their first of two weekend trips to Peoria, going against the Padres on Friday and the Mariners on Sunday. Gavin Floyd gets the start against the Padres, coming off of four no-hit innings thrown against the Dodgers last Sunday. Floyd will be followed to the mound by Jack Egbert, who has not allowed an earned run in eight innings this spring, and Adam Russell for this 3:05 p.m. CT contest.
