Fatigue more of an issue for Meche
Balky back OK, but KC righty tweaks workout routine
KANSAS CITY -- Royals pitcher Gil Meche seemed cautious in assessing his condition on Sunday after throwing long toss from flat ground, checking out his body and his back after his disappointing start on Thursday night against the Orioles.
How was it?
"It could be better," Meche said. "I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as not feeling anything. I've cut my [bullpen sessions] out and tried to alter a couple of things mechanically to see if we can't free it up."
A cranky back had been a problem in Spring Training and sporadically during the season. Did his back feel OK?
"Well, I guess," Meche said. "The first few innings aren't ever really an issue. It's just as the game goes along -- getting up, sitting down, getting hot -- I might have to find different things to do between innings to stay as long as I can."
At any rate, Meche says he's on track for his start on Wednesday night against the Indians.
After lasting 4 1/3 innings and giving up five runs to Baltimore in Thursday night's 9-5 loss, Meche complained not about his back but about fatigue. He changed his workout routine to combat that.
"I've pretty much busted my butt this week, running a lot," he said. "I think it'll just take a little bit of time for my legs to build up to where they need to be just to help out as much as possible, because in Spring Training, I didn't run a lot, just for the fact of my back and I hadn't done it at all for the first month, month and a half. And to throw a lot of pitches, your legs have got to be underneath you all the time, and if they're not, it could cause other problems, which could be a factor, too."
Meche, Kansas City's Opening Day starter, has a 2-4 record and a 4.60 ERA in eight starts.
