Hernandez called up, starts Sunday

Royals infield prospect plugged in at second base vs. Halos

09/06/09 12:48 PM ET

KANSAS CITY -- Infielder Luis Hernandez was called up from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday and immediately inserted into the Royals' lineup at second base.

Manager Trey Hillman said that Hernandez was expected to arrive in time for Sunday afternoon's game against the Angels. He was in the lineup to fill in for Alberto Callaspo, who has a bruised right ankle.

Hernandez was up with the Royals earlier this season and batted .249 in 22 games. For Omaha, he had a .303 average with 10 doubles in 55 games.

Hillman also confirmed that third baseman Alex Gordon would rejoin the Royals after Omaha completes its season on Monday. Gordon was optioned to Omaha on Aug. 18 after batting just .227 in 22 games upon his return from hip surgery.
