Perez set for surgery; KC eying catching help
Backstop to have left knee repaired Friday in Los Angeles
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Royals catcher Salvador Perez will undergo surgery on his left knee at 10 a.m. CT on Friday in Los Angeles.
The surgery will be performed by Dr. Clarence Shields, of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and Royals team physician Dr. Vincent Key. The two doctors were to meet on Thursday to discuss the surgery on the lateral meniscus tear in Perez's left knee.
Perez was injured on Tuesday when he reached for a pitch while warming up left-hander Jonathan Sanchez in the bullpen before a game. Perez caught one inning, then was taken for an MRI, which revealed the damage.
There's been no timetable set for Perez's return, although the recovery process generally takes from six to 12 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury.
"It's going to be pretty important," manager Ned Yost said.
"There's not another Sal out there that you can get -- there's just not. The next-best thing is any semblance of a guy that can catch and throw and can hit a little bit, [which] can cost you young prospects, and we don't want to do that. So you either get a guy that can hit like a son of a gun and can't catch or you get a guy that can catch like a son of a gun and is at least a good situational hitter and [can] mix in a few hits. I'd rather go that route."
The Royals made a move like that last year as Spring Training ended when they obtained catcher Matt Treanor from Texas to share the job with Pena.
"We're looking to see if we can get it in a situation like we had Treanor last year," Yost said.
Currently in camp the Royals have Triple-A catchers Cody Clark, best known for his defense, and Max Ramirez, best known for his offense.
"Both of them are viable options," Yost said.
Catcher Manny Pina, who ranked behind Perez and Pena on the depth chart, had knee surgery on Feb. 27 and isn't expected back until about May 1.
