Red Sox place left-hander Andrew Miller on disabled list
Right-hander Alfredo Aceves recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed left-hander Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list with a left foot sprain. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Alfredo Aceves was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Aceves will be available for tonight’s game against the Angels at 8:05 p.m. ET.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Miller, 28, suffered a left foot sprain in the seventh inning of last night’s game against the Angels. In 37 appearances out of Boston’s bullpen this year, he is 1-2 with a 2.64 ERA (9 ER/30.2), 17 walks and 48 strikeouts. Among all American League relievers in 2013, Miller ranks third in strikeouts per nine innings at 14.1 and tied for eighth in strikeouts.
Aceves, 31, rejoins the Red Sox for his fifth major league stint of the season. With Boston this year, he has gone 4-1 with a 5.05 ERA (20 ER/35.2 IP), 22 walks, and 24 strikeouts in nine games (six starts). Each of his last three appearances for the Red Sox have been spot starts and he has gone a perfect 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER/17.0 IP) in those outings. At Pawtucket, Aceves was 4-2 with a 4.25 ERA (23 ER/48.2 IP), 17 walks, and 39 strikeouts.
