Royals trade Beltran to Astros
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
KANSAS CITY, MO -- The Kansas City Royals have obtained catcher John Buck, third baseman Mark Teahen and right-handed starter Mike Wood in exchange for Carlos Beltran, Royals Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager Allard Baird announced today.

The Royals traded Beltran to the Houston Astros in exchange for right-handed pitcher Octavio Dotel and Buck and then traded Dotel to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Teahen and Wood.

Buck, 23, is hitting .300 (68-for-227) with 11 doubles, 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 65 games at Triple A New Orleans this season. The 6-3, 210-pound catcher was selected by the Astros in the seventh round of the June 1998 draft and is in his second year as the Zephyrs primary catcher. Buck has been named an All-Star the last three seasons and played in the 2002 MLB All-Star Futures Game in Milwaukee. Buck, born July 7, 1980, will be added to the Royals 25-man roster and will join the team on Friday for his first trip to the Majors.

Teahen, 22, is a 6-3, 210-pound third baseman that bats left and throws right. He is hitting .275 (19-69) in 20 games for Sacramento (AAA) with 8 doubles and 10 RBI, including a .323 (10-31) road average. He opened the season with Midland (AA) and hit .335 (66-197) in 53 games with 31 runs, 15 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs and 36 RBI. Teahen, born, Sept. 6, 1981, is a native of Redlands, Calif., and was a sandwich pick (39th overall) in the 2002 June Free Agent Draft. Teahan will be assigned to Omaha.

Wood, 24, is a 6-3, 210-pound right-handed starter from West Palm Beach, Fla. He is 11-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 15 games for Sacramento (AAA) this season. He has won 10 of his last 11 decisions and has allowed 83 hits, 42 runs, 28 earned runs in 90.0 innings pitched. He has walked 24 batters and recorded 66 strikeouts. Wood, born, April 26, 1980, made his Major League debut with the A's in 2003 and went 2-1 with a 10.54 ERA in 7 games (one start). He was a 10th round pick in the 2001 draft out of the University of North Florida and led the A's minor league system in wins with 14 in 2002. Wood will be added to the Royals 25-man roster and he will join the team on Friday.

The Royals will also recall OF David DeJesus from Omaha, option LHP Chris George to Omaha and option catcher Mike Tonis to Omaha. The Royals will transfer Kelly Stinnett to the 60-day D.L. to clear room on the 40-man roster.
