Royals announce Minor League personnel for 2008
KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals have announced the Minor League coaching staffs for the 2008 season. The Royals also named their Minor League coordinators for next season.
The coaching staff at Triple-A Omaha remains intact, as Mike Jirschele returns to his managerial post for the sixth consecutive season. The Wisconsin native also managed the O-Royals from 1995-1997. Tom Burgmeier will mentor the pitchers at Omaha for a third straight season. Terry Bradshaw will spend his fifth season as hitting coach for the O-Royals.
The Royals' Double-A affiliate will move to Springdale, Arkansas in 2008 and become the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Managing the Naturals in their inaugural season will be Brian Poldberg, who was on the Royals Major League coaching staff for the past four seasons. Poldberg previously managed seven seasons in the Royals system and also served as a catching instructor and hitting coach. Poldberg's staff will include pitching coach Larry Carter, who enters his 11th season in the Royals organization and seventh at the Double-A level, and Tommy Gregg, who will begin his second season as the hitting coach at the Class AA level.
Darryl Kennedy, who spent the 2007 season managing rookie-level Burlington (NC), will move up the Atlantic coast and take the reigns at Class A Wilmington in 2008. The rest of the Wilmington staff will remain the same, with Steve Luebber serving as pitching coach and Nelson Liriano working as the hitting coach.
Taking over the helm at Class A Burlington (IA) will be Brian Rupp, who had managed at Idaho Falls (R) since the 2004 season, leading the Chukars to the playoffs in three of his four seasons. 11-year former Major League pitcher Doug Henry joins the Royals organization as the pitching coach for Burlington. Henry, who pitched for the Royals in 2001, had served as a pitching coach in the Atlanta Braves organization in 2006 and 2007. Ryan Long returns for his second season at the Bees hitting coach.
Jim Gabella will manage the Idaho Falls Chukars (R) in 2008. Gabella had skippered the Burlington Bees since the 2004 season. Jerry Nyman returns for his second season tutoring the pitchers at Idaho Falls while Jon Williams, who worked as the hitting coach at Burlington (NC) in 2007, will hold the same post with the Chukars.
Tony Tijerina will serve as the manager at rookie-level Burlington (NC) as well as be the Royals Assistant Minor League Field Coordinator. Tijerina was the manager at Double-A Wichita in 2007. Bobby St. Pierre will serve on Tijerina's staff as the Royals pitching coach. St. Pierre was the pitching coach at Burlington (IA) in 2007, his first year in the Royals organization. Patrick Anderson will serve his eighth season in the Royals organization as the Burlington hitting coach. Anderson served in the same role in 2007 with Idaho Falls.
The Royals rookie league squad in Surprise, Arizona will be managed by Julio Bruno. Bruno, who served as the hitting coach for the Arizona Royals in 2007, managed the Royals Dominican Summer League squad from 2001-2006. Bruno's staff will include Mark Davis, who returns for his third season as the Royals pitching coach, Carlos Martinez, who enters his second season in Surprise as a coach, and Justin Gemoll, who takes his first coaching job as the hitting instructor in Arizona after an eight-year professional career as an infielder in the Royals system.
Doug Sisson joins the Royals organization as the Minor League Field Coordinator. Sisson served as the Montreal Expos Minor League Field Coordinator in 2003 and 2004. He has also managed 11 seasons in the minors with the Expos, Angels and Rangers.
John Wathan returns for his 36th year in professional baseball and 32nd with the Royals as an Assistant to Player Development.
Bill Fischer will work his 61st year in professional baseball in 2008 as the Minor League Pitching Coordinator. Fischer was the Senior Pitching Advisor for KC in 2007 and also worked with the club from 1975-1978 and in 1984.
Andre David returns in 2008, his 11th season in the Royals organization, as the Minor League Hitting Coordinator.
Mark Harris, who joined the Royals organization in 2007 as a roving coach, will serve as the Minor League Infield Coordinator in 2008.
Benny Cadahia will begin his second season as the Royals Catching Coordinator.
Seven-year former Major League second baseman Quilvio Veras will work as the Royals Roving Coach in 2008. Veras played from 1995-2001 for the Marlins, Padres and Braves.
Ryan Stoneberg returns for his seventh season with the Royals and second as Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.
Kyle Turner, who served in 2007 as the trainer with Idaho Falls, will be the Royals Minor League Medical Coordinator in 2008.
