KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals have signed catcher John Buck and right-handed pitcher Joel Peralta to one-year contracts for 2009, avoiding arbitration. Consistent with club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Buck, 28, hit .224 with 23 doubles, nine home runs, 48 RBI and 48 runs scored in 109 games in 2008 with the Royals. He set new career highs in runs, doubles and walks (38). A career .234 hitter over five seasons with Kansas City, the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has 62 career home runs at the Major League level.

The 32-year-old Peralta was 1-2 with a 5.98 ERA in 40 relief appearances last season. The 5-foot-11 right-hander from Bonao in the Dominican Republic is 4-8 with a 4.45 ERA in 194 career Major League appearances, all in relief.
