New All-Star Meche to start opener

Kansas City (34-48) vs. Seattle (45-33), 7:10 p.m. CT

For their second visit to Kansas City this season, the Mariners arrive without manager Mike Hargrove, who resigned before Sunday's game despite his club's seven-game winning streak. Bench coach John McLaren is the interim manager.

And, for the third time, the Mariners will be facing their ex-teammate, newly anointed All-Star Gil Meche. He left the Mariners after six years to sign with the Royals.

In his first two starts against the Mariners, Meche split decisions. He won on April 28 at Seattle, 8-3, giving up three unearned runs over six innings. But he lost on May 25 at KC, 10-2, lasting just 4 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs. That was his worst start this season.

His opponent, Felix Hernandez, was the winner in that game. He gave up just one run in his eight innings.

Hernandez, 21, this season has thrown a one-hitter against the Red Sox and struck out 12 A's on Opening Day.

Pitching matchup
KC: RHP Gil Meche (5-6, 3.28 ERA)
After five straight losses, Meche has won his past two decisions, getting an unaccustomed bucket of runs (12) in his last start at Anaheim. Meche has been solid this season: He's given up three or fewer runs in 12 of his 17 starts, and he's gone six or more innings in all but three outings. His current ERA is the highest it's been since April 12.

SEA: RHP Felix Hernandez (4-4, 4.33 ERA)
Hernandez struggled through much of his last outing against the Red Sox, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He constantly worked his way in and out of trouble, but never allowed Boston to score more than two runs in an inning, allowing the Mariners to stay in a game that they eventually won, 8-7.

Player to watch
Ichiro Suzuki has been hot, finishing June with a .427 (47-for-110) average. In two games against Meche this season, Ichiro is 3-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs.
