Lingering sore hip has Guillen at DH

Slugger could play the field if better; right shoulder sore no more

KANSAS CITY -- Jose Guillen was in the lineup as the DH for Tuesday night's game against Detroit, but he's still not fully healed from his hip flexor.

"We're considering the possibility of if he comes out feeling better than we anticipated, him playing in the field," manager Trey Hillman said.

Guillen has been bothered by the injury since last weekend and hasn't played in the outfield since Wednesday, when he left the game with right shoulder soreness. The soreness in the shoulder has subsided, and now the hip pain is the only thing keeping him out of the field.

In the batter's box, the pain isn't making much of a difference at all. In fact, it seems to be helping him. Guillen is 5-for-11 with two RBIs in his last two games. He was hitting .207 entering Tuesday's game, the first time his average has been above the Mendoza line (.200) all season.

"It certainly makes sense," Hillman said about Guillen hitting better with the injury, "because he was a little slow with his lower-half movement and more controlled. And I think that gave him a little better balance position to be able to fire back."
