Teahen deal could be in works
Royals 'focusing' on Fontenot, Marshall in return for outfielder
By Dick Kaegel / MLB.com
The Chicago Tribune reported on Sunday that "Kansas City is focused" on second baseman Mike Fontenot and left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall in a possible trade for Teahen.
Teahen's name was linked to the Cubs in mid-October before the Royals had added to their outfield by obtaining Coco Crisp in a deal with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.
Cubs manager Lou Piniella has expressed interest in adding left-handed bats. Teahen slid to .255 last season but, in the two previous seasons, had batted .285 and .290 for the Royals. Last season he had 15 home runs and 59 RBIs in 149 games.
Teahen is versatile, capable of playing left and right field as well as third and first base.
The Royals are seeking a middle infielder to pair with rookie flash Mike Aviles. Fontenot, a left-handed batter, hit .305 for the Cubs in primarily a backup role. He had nine homers and 40 RBIs in 243 at-bats and had an on-base percentage of .395.
Fontenot played 82 games at second base, including 49 starts, and made just one error.
The Royals also are looking to re-build their bullpen after trading Leo Nunez to the Florida Marlins for first baseman Mike Jacobs and Ramon Ramirez to the Red Sox for Crisp. The 6-foot-7 Marshall was 3-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 34 games, including seven starts.
