KC inks Hosmer, three others to one-year deals

Hosmer, called up to the Royals last May 6, responded with a superb rookie season that included 19 home runs, 27 doubles, 78 RBIs and a .293 average in 128 games. As a result, the first baseman has signed a 2012 contract for $502,500, or $22,500 more than the big league minimum salary of $480,000.
He was among four players signed to one-year deals, the Royals announced Saturday.
Hosmer's buddy across the diamond, third baseman Mike Moustakas, signed for $487,250. Moustakas, who joined the Royals on June 10, had a slow start at bat but hit .379 in his final 36 games to finish at .263 with 18 doubles, five homers and 30 RBIs in a total of 89 games.
Lorenzo Cain, who is getting a chance this spring to become the Royals' starting center fielder, signed for $480,850 after hitting .312 last season for Triple-A Omaha. Cain, who was part of the Zack Greinke trade with Milwaukee, is expected to take over for Melky Cabrera, who was dealt to San Francisco in November.
Pitcher Luis Mendoza, a veteran right-hander who revitalized his career with a 12-5 record and 2.18 ERA last season for the Omaha Storm Chasers, signed for $488,925. He was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year and also won both of his September starts for the Royals. He'll get a chance this spring to crack the Kansas City rotation.
That leaves seven players on the Royals' 40-man roster with fewer than three years of Major League service who remain unsigned. They are pitchers Louis Coleman, Danny Duffy, Greg Holland and Vin Mazzaro, catcher Salvador Perez, second baseman Johnny Giavotella and shortstop Alcides Escobar.
