KANSAS CITY -- Center fielder Amalani Fukofuka from James Logan High School in Union City, Calif., was the Royals' fifth-round selection (No. 144 overall) and the team's second high-school selection on Friday.
"He came out to our workout that we had here at the stadium, and he kind of rejuvenated everybody a little bit," Royals director of scouting Lonnie Goldberg said. "He is young, he is exciting, he's like a Franklin Gutierrez type, a good body."
Fukofuka batted .390 with a .416 on-base percentage his senior season for the Colts as their leadoff hitter. He had 32 hits, seven RBIs and 22 runs.
At James Logan, Fukofuka also played wide receiver and defensive back for the football team, which went 10-1 in the fall.
