Manaea fires his first shutout for Wilmington

Left-hander Sean Manaea, the Royals' No. 3 prospect, according to MLB.com, threw a shutout on Wednesday in leading Class A Advanced Wilmington to a 4-0 victory over Frederick in Game 1 of a doubleheader in the Carolina League.

Manaea, ranked No. 73 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list, struck out seven batters, walked one and held the Keys to just two hits in seven innings. He threw 92 pitches and was credited with the first shutout of his professional career because Minor League doubleheaders are comprised of seven-inning games.

Wilmington gave Manaea an early lead when No. 1 prospect Raul Mondesi hit a two-run home run in the first inning. It was the sixth home run of the season for Mondesi, ranked No. 42 on the Top 100.

Manaea made sure that lead would stand, as he outdueled Orioles' No. 12 prospect Parker Bridwell, who also threw a complete game. Manaea didn't allow a hit after the third inning and no Frederick batter advanced into scoring position after the first. At one point, he retired 12 batters in a row.

With the victory, Manaea improved to 5-8 with a 3.25 ERA. He has struck out 121 batters and walked 50 in 102 1/3 innings this season. He and Bridwell are tied for the most strikeouts in the Carolina League.
