Left-hander Sean Manaea, the Royals' No. 3 prospect, struck out a career-high 12 batters in seven scoreless innings to lead Class A Advanced Wilmington to a 2-0 victory against Potomac on Friday.
Manaea, ranked No. 69 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list, allowed three hits, walked none and hit one batter. He threw 98 pitches and won his third straight decision.
Manaea didn't need much run support and the Blue Rocks gave him just enough to get a win. Royals' No. 1 prospect Adalberto Raul Mondesi drove in the first run of the game with a groundout in the sixth inning and Jared Schlehuber added an insurance run when he led off the eighth with a homer.
The Royals selected Manaea with the 34th overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. He underwent hip surgery shortly after signing to repair an injury that had hampered him throughout his junior season at Indiana State. The surgery delayed his professional debut until this spring, but Manaea stayed healthy and excelled in his first season.
With the victory on Friday, Manaea will finish the year 7-8 with a 3.11 ERA. He leads the Carolina League with 146 strikeouts to go with 54 walks in 121 2/3 innings.
