Royals edged in opener

Gil Meche gave up two runs on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings, but the Royals dropped the series opener to the White Sox. Emil Brown crushed a two-run home run and Joey Gathright added an RBI single in the sixth inning, but that accounted for all of Kansas City's scoring. Gathright collected three hits in the game.

A seventh-inning rally fueled by young players lifted the White Sox over the Royals, ending Chicago's eight-game slide. After Danny Richar tied the game with a home run, Jerry Owens singled, stole second base and scored on Josh Fields' RBI single. Scott Podsednik hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
