Coaching Career
After spending 35 years in the Kansas City organization, Luis Silverio joined the Pirates Major League staff on November 24, 2010. In addition to his role as the First Base Coach, he will serve as the Club's Outfield and Baserunning Coach. Silverio was Kansas City's minor league outfield coordinator in 2010 after spending the 2009 season as the club's Special Assistant to Player Development. Luis spent six seasons (2003-2008) on the Royals Major League coaching staff, manning the first base coaching box three years and the third base box for three. Prior to joining Kansas City's big league staff, Silverio worked as the Coordinator of Dominican Republic Operations (2000-02) as well as serving as the Minor League Outfield Instructor in 2000-01. He also served as general manager for the Royals Dominican League affiliate in Salcedo from 1990-2002 while also overseeing the club's player development operations and scouting in the Dominican Republic and Panama. Luis also served as a scout for the organization during his tenure with Kansas City.

Playing Career
Originally signed by the Royals as a non-drafted free agent on November 12, 1973, Silverio played in the minor league system until 1982. During that time, he was named to the Gulf Coast League All-Star team in 1975 after leading the circuit in home runs and played on championship teams in 1976 (Waterloo), 1977 (Jacksonville) and 1978 (Omaha). During the summer of 1975, while he was leading the Gulf Coast League in home runs, his teammate, Clint Hurdle, led the league with 31 RBI for a team that went 31-18. Silverio, who was a teammate of Hurdle with the Royals in 1978, appeared in eight games for the American League West champions that September and went 6-for-11 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and seven runs scored. He made his Major League debut as a pinch runner at California on September 9 and collected his first big league hit the following day (in his first Major League at bat) with a single off Nolan Ryan. After missing the 1979 season due to right knee surgery, Luis played parts of three more minor league seasons before retiring as a player following the 1982 campaign.
