Coaching Career

• Begins his first season as the Royals bench coach after being named to Ned Yost's staff on October 25, 2013.

• Served as a special assignment scout for the New York Yankees in 2013.

• Prior to accepting the position with the Yankees, he was the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011-12 under then-manager John Farrell.

• Managed the Seattle Mariners for parts of two seasons (2009-10), before being relieved of his duties on August 10, 2010...amassed a 127-147 record, including an 85-77 record in his first season.

• Coached at the major league level for the Texas Rangers as bench coach (2003-06) and third base coach (2007)...also served as the Oakland A's bench coach in 2008...first major league job came with the Anaheim Angels as field coordinator (2001-02).

• Managed for four seasons in the minor leagues in 1997 for Peoria (Rookie), for High Desert (Class A) in 1998 and El Paso (Double-A) in 1999 in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization and Erie (Double-A) in the Los Angeles Angels' organization in 2000...owns a career 215-248 (.464) record as a minor league manager.

• Named California League Manager of the Year in 1998 after leading High Desert to second-half Southern Division title.

Playing Career

• Selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 11th round of the 1985 June draft.

• Played 12 seasons of professional baseball, including 18 games for the Chicago White Sox in 1991...batted .226 with a double...all nine starts behind the plate came with knuckleballer Charlie Hough on the mound.

• Spent seven seasons in Triple-A (1990-96) with six different clubs...hit .258 with 30 homers and 318 RBI in the minors...led Southern League catchers in fielding percentage at Birmingham (.990) in 1989 and topped the Pioneer League (.998) with Billings in 1985.

Miscellaneous Notes

• Wilbur Donald Wakamatsu resides in North Richmond Hills, Texas with his wife, Laura...the couple has three children: Jacob, Lucas and Jadyn.

• Became the first Asian American to be named manager of a Major League club with Seattle in 2009.

• Graduated from Hayward (CA) High School in 1981...lettered in baseball, basketball and football.

• Played four seasons at Arizona State (1982-85), earning All-Pac-10 honors at catcher three straight years (1983-85)...batted .314 with 22 doubles, 18 homers and 133 RBI in 196 games at ASU...team captain in 1985.
