PERSONAL: Michael Richard "Rick" Waits…resides in Tucson, AZ, with his wife, Annie…has three children: Kathryn, Michael and John…graduated from Therrill High School (GA) where he played baseball, basketball and football…pitched back-to-back no-hitters in high school…attended Clayton Junior College (GA) and Atlanta Baptist College…following his big league career, played and managed in Italy.
COACHING CAREER: Is in his first season as the Mariners Major League Pitching Coach, but his fourth season in the organization…spent three seasons as the team's minor league pitching coordinator…worked in the Mets organization for 16 seasons…spent seven seasons as a minor league pitching coach, was the Major League Bullpen Coach in 2003, then spent seven years (2004-10) as New York's minor league pitching coordinator…in 1993 and 1994 was the manager and assistant GM of the Parma Angels Baseball Club in Parma, Italy; Parma was the regular season and Italian Cup champion both seasons…was the Player/Manager for Rimini Pirates Baseball Club in Rimini, Italy from 1987-89…was voted Manager of the Year in 1988, and the club won the Italian Baseball Federation Championship in 1987 and 1988.
PLAYING CAREER: Rick was a fifth-round selection of the Washington Senators in the 1970 Draft…pitched in the Majors over 12 seasons with Texas (1973), Cleveland (1975-83) and Milwaukee (1983-85)…compiled a 79-92 record with 8 saves and a 4.25 ERA in 317 games (190 starts) in the big leagues…had 47 career complete games, including 10 shutouts…tossed a complete game and defeated the New York Yankees 9-2 on the final day of the 1978 season to force the historic Yankees/Red Sox one-game playoff.
